• A VIEW of Richmond Park will form the basis for a new pin badge celebrating the 2012 Olympics, after residents voted it the most recognisable landmark in the borough.

Hundreds of people voted in a competition which pitted the park against Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace and Richmond Riverside to represent Richmond upon Thames. The badges will be designed between now and Christmas and will be on sale in the new year.

Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "The park is one of the most recognised parts of the whole capital, and it's enjoyed by millions of people every year so it's very fitting it's been chosen to be our Olympic symbol. The launch of these badges and the news that the South African team will basing themselves in Richmond upon Thames shows the Games really are a London wide event, everyone in our borough should feel a part of the Olympics party."

All London boroughs were asked to suggest views or landmarks in their areas to be made into a pin badge so people across London could wear it to celebrate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The badge will be in the shape of the London 2012 logo and will feature a view of the park and the Olympic rings.
